a personal commitment.
Dr. Sashidhar Ganta is the Founder and President of NuSelf and a board-certified robotic general and bariatric surgeon. For more than 20 years, he has cared for patients seeking lasting weight loss, improved metabolic health and experienced help after previous surgery. His practice includes more than 6,000 bariatric patients, with a particular focus on advanced metabolic surgery and complex revisions.
He founded the Austin Institute of Bariatrics and Laparoscopy, now NuSelf Bariatrics, to bring a comprehensive approach to Central Texas. Today, patients can discuss metabolic and bariatric surgery, endoscopic treatment, medical weight loss and revision options within the same practice. The recommendation begins with your health, your previous treatment and the results you hope to achieve.
Dr. Ganta’s experience extends from introducing new procedures in Central Texas to teaching advanced techniques to other surgeons. That experience also shapes the everyday details of care: listening to your concerns, explaining the operation, planning your recovery and staying connected through long-term follow-up.

Experience & Innovation
Dr. Ganta’s contributions trace the development of minimally invasive bariatric surgery in Central Texas—from expanding available procedures to refining single-incision techniques and introducing new surgical assistance. These milestones are part of the experience he brings to each consultation.
- Central Texas firsts
Expanding access to metabolic surgery
Dr. Ganta was the first surgeon in Central Texas to perform gastric sleeve, duodenal switch and gastric plication procedures. His early adoption of these approaches expanded the treatments available to patients in Austin and Cedar Park.
- 2008
Texas’s first transumbilical single-incision LAP-BAND
On September 9, 2008, Dr. Ganta performed Texas’s first LAP-BAND procedure through a single incision at the umbilicus. He subsequently taught the technique to experienced bariatric surgeons who traveled to Austin from across the country.
- 2009
The Ganta stitch
He developed a liver-retraction technique known as the “Ganta stitch” to help perform single-incision gastric banding without an additional incision for a liver retractor. This contribution addressed a practical technical challenge in single-incision surgery.
- 2010
Advancing single-incision gastric sleeve
Dr. Ganta went on to pioneer single-incision sleeve surgery, performing a transumbilical sleeve gastrectomy at North Austin Medical Center on September 7, 2010. His work extended single-incision techniques beyond gastric banding.
- 2024
The first Maestro procedure in an ambulatory surgery center
On October 29, 2024, Dr. Ganta performed the first procedure using Moon Surgical’s Maestro system in an ambulatory surgery center, at Surgeons Point Surgery Center in Cedar Park. Moon Surgical’s subsequent announcement confirmed the center as the first ASC worldwide to use Maestro, with Dr. Ganta performing its first case.
Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Ganta uses laparoscopic and robotic approaches in general, metabolic and bariatric surgery. His experience includes advanced bariatric operations, revision surgery and the use of Maestro as a digital surgical assistant during laparoscopy.
The approach is selected for your operation and anatomy. In consultation, Dr. Ganta explains how the planned technique works, what it is intended to accomplish and what preparation and follow-up you will need.
Robotic Bariatric SurgeryTeaching and Surgical Education
At Yale, Dr. Ganta developed expertise in advanced laparoscopy and laparoscopic suturing. He received the “Topgun” award for laparoscopic suturing and has taught these demanding techniques to other surgeons. His practice became a national training site for single-incision gastric band surgery, welcoming experienced surgeons to Austin to observe and learn.
The same emphasis on clear explanations carries into patient care. Understanding why a treatment is recommended, how it changes the body and what happens afterward is an essential part of preparing for surgery.
Clinical focus
Dr. Ganta’s clinical focus includes primary metabolic and bariatric surgery, complex revisions, weight regain after surgery and second opinions. He also offers endoscopic treatment and medical weight loss, including the comprehensive SkinnyShots program. Robotic general surgery is coordinated through NuSelf Surgical Group.
A Relationship That Continues
Your relationship with NuSelf continues after the procedure. Preparation, recovery, nutrition and ongoing medical follow-up are part of the plan. Dr. Ganta and the team help you understand the changes ahead, review your progress and address concerns as your needs evolve.
Continued long-term follow-up helps you maintain your results and health. For patients returning after earlier treatment, the conversation begins with what has changed and which combination of medical, endoscopic or surgical care is appropriate now.
Nutrition & Long-Term SupportYour consultation
Your first appointment is a conversation about your health, previous treatment and goals. If you have had surgery before, Dr. Ganta reviews the original procedure, subsequent treatment and current concerns. Together, you discuss the recommendation, expected recovery, insurance or self-pay options and a timeline that fits your needs.
Bring your current medication list, relevant test results, and records from any previous bariatric treatment. Write down the questions you want to discuss—we welcome them.
