Understanding Lap-Band Surgery

LAP-BAND places an adjustable silicone band around the upper stomach. Saline can be added or removed through a port under the skin. The band can be removed surgically, but removal is another procedure and does not guarantee a return to the original anatomy or weight. Discuss adjustments, long-term device problems and alternatives with your surgeon.

Appetite support without removing the stomach

An adjustable gastric band changes how food passes through the upper stomach. The band creates a small pouch and an adjustable opening, helping you notice fullness with smaller meals. It does not remove the ghrelin-producing portion of the stomach or reroute the small intestine.

Its metabolic effects are therefore different from those of sleeve, bypass or duodenal switch. Improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure and other weight-related conditions can occur as weight is lost, but the band does not produce the same degree of intestinal hormone change as bypass operations. Expectations should reflect the treatment you actually receive.

Success depends on comfortable eating, appropriate band adjustments and consistent follow-up. If an existing band causes swallowing problems, reflux, inadequate weight loss or weight regain, evaluation can identify the cause and whether removal or conversion would better support your health. We review your original procedure, symptoms, nutrition and goals before recommending a plan. Continued follow-up supports weight maintenance and helps recognize band-related problems early.

The Lap-Band Procedure

During the Lap-Band surgery, a silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. The procedure is performed laparoscopically, meaning it requires only small incisions and typically results in shorter recovery time and less discomfort compared to other weight loss surgeries. The band's tightness can be adjusted by adding or removing saline through a port placed under the skin, allowing for personalized treatment and control over the weight loss process. Your discharge and activity timeline are individualized according to your recovery and your surgeon’s instructions.

Eligibility for Lap-Band

At NuSelf, primary metabolic and bariatric surgery may be considered with a BMI over 30 when an obesity-related condition is present, or a BMI over 35 without an associated condition. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure are part of your evaluation. We consider your health, previous treatment and readiness for long-term follow-up together. Insurance plans may apply different coverage requirements. LAP-BAND may be considered for selected adults according to the device indication, BMI, health conditions and previous weight-loss efforts. Your surgeon will compare it with sleeve, bypass, medication and other suitable treatments, including the need for regular band adjustments and possible future removal.
