At NuSelf, discover life-changing weight loss solutions with Gastric Bypass surgery. Driven by one of the most experienced Bariatric surgeons in Austin Dr. Sashidhar Ganta and Dr. Suraj Panjwani, we're committed to helping you achieve a healthier, more joyful life.

In gastric bypass surgery, Dr. Ganta staples off a large section of the stomach, creating a tiny stomach pouch, approximately one ounce or 30 milliliters in volume. Next, the first portion of the small intestine is divided, and the bottom end of the divided small intestine is brought up and connected to the newly created small stomach pouch. The procedure is completed by connecting the top portion of the divided small intestine to the small intestine further down so that the stomach acids and digestive enzymes from the bypassed stomach and first portion of small intestine will eventually mix with the food.
When the pouch fills with food a feeling of fullness occurs. The reconnected intestine causes the food to bypass part of the intestine so some of the nutrients and calories in food will not be absorbed. Thus, patients lose weight.
Gastric bypass creates a smaller stomach pouch and changes the route food takes through the small intestine. Food reaches parts of the intestine sooner, changing the signals sent between your digestive system, pancreas and brain. This helps explain why the procedure can improve blood sugar even before substantial weight loss occurs.
GLP-1 and PYY are natural hormones released by intestinal cells after a meal. GLP-1 helps the pancreas release insulin when glucose is elevated and participates in appetite regulation. PYY helps signal fullness. Their meal-related responses generally rise after bypass, helping many patients feel satisfied with smaller portions. The operation also changes nutrient absorption and other metabolic pathways; its effects cannot be reduced to a single hormone.
These changes can support meaningful weight loss and improvement, and sometimes remission, of type 2 diabetes. The result depends on your health, diabetes duration and other factors. Your team monitors glucose and medications as your needs change. Long-term nutrition, vitamins, laboratory testing and follow-up remain essential to preserving health and results.
Gastric Bypass, a highly effective bariatric surgery, creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the upper small intestines, significantly reducing food intake and calorie absorption. This procedure permanently reduces the size of your stomach and changes appetite signals, improves your metabolism and results in excellent weight loss long-term. It's not just a surgery; it's a stepping stone to long-term weight management and health improvement.
During Gastric Bypass, our surgeons make small incisions in the abdomen, create a small pouch at the top of the stomach and connect it directly to the small intestine, bypassing a large part of the stomach and duodenum. This procedure is performed with the utmost precision using minimally invasive techniques for faster recovery and reduced pain.
At NuSelf, primary metabolic and bariatric surgery may be considered with a BMI over 30 when an obesity-related condition is present, or a BMI over 35 without an associated condition. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure are part of your evaluation. We consider your health, previous treatment and readiness for long-term follow-up together. Insurance plans may apply different coverage requirements.
