What is the Gastric Sleeve?

Gastric Sleeve is the most sought after Bariatric Surgery to help you lose a lot of weight, get healthy again and enjoy life to the fullest. This procedure permanently reduces the size of your stomach and changes appetite signals, improves your metabolism and promotes long-term weight loss. Unlike other weight loss methods where your body fights with you, Gastric Sleeve changes your body to work with you to help achieving and maintaining long term weight loss easier.

A smaller stomach. A meaningful change in hunger signals.

Gastric sleeve is metabolic surgery: it changes more than the amount your stomach can hold. The removed portion includes most of the fundus, an area that makes a large share of the body's ghrelin. Ghrelin is a hormone that helps signal hunger to the brain. Reducing this source commonly lowers ghrelin levels, which can make hunger less intense and smaller meals more satisfying. Hunger is influenced by several hormones and can change over time; the operation does not eliminate it completely.

The sleeve also changes how quickly a meal moves into the small intestine. After eating, intestinal cells release natural hormones including GLP-1 and PYY. These signals help regulate fullness, insulin release and blood sugar. Their responses can increase after sleeve surgery, alongside improved insulin sensitivity as weight falls.

For you, these changes can mean eating less with greater satisfaction and improvement in weight-related health conditions. Nutrition, activity, appropriate medication adjustments and continued follow-up help you use these benefits while protecting your long-term health.

The metabolic benefit The sleeve removes most of the stomach tissue that produces ghrelin, a hormone that signals hunger. This can reduce hunger naturally. These hormonal changes also support metabolic health and long-term weight maintenance.

How is the Gastric Sleeve performed

In gastric sleeve surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen, removes approximately 75-80% of the stomach, and shapes the remaining portion into a smaller, banana shaped structure. This reshaped stomach is then sealed using surgical staples or sutures. No foreign body is inserted.

Is Gastric Sleeve Right for You?

At NuSelf, primary metabolic and bariatric surgery may be considered with a BMI over 30 when an obesity-related condition is present, or a BMI over 35 without an associated condition. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure are part of your evaluation. We consider your health, previous treatment and readiness for long-term follow-up together. Insurance plans may apply different coverage requirements.

Real people. Life-changing stories.

Single Incision or SILS Gastric Sleeve

This advanced technical approach involves performing the gastric sleeve procedure via one small incision at the belly button, which conceals the incision within the belly button. Our gastric sleeve patients have an opportunity for significantly improved cosmetic results and less pain with a faster recovery. Your discharge and activity timeline are individualized according to your recovery and your surgeon’s instructions.

Dr. Sashidhar Ganta pioneered the SILS approach for lap band surgery and gastric sleeve and is believed to be the first bariatric surgeon in Texas to perform lap band surgery utilizing the trans-umbilical SILS approach in September 2008. He has trained surgeons from across the country and patients travel to Austin from other states to receive treatment from Dr. Ganta.

Many people consider bariatric surgery an investment in long-term health, mobility and quality of life. Improvements in obesity-related conditions may change future healthcare needs and costs; the financial effect is individual.

Endoscopic Gastric Sleeve

The endoscopic gastric sleeve procedure involves suturing the stomach from inside to create the shape of a sleeve and it does not involve removing any part of the stomach. In this regard, this is similar to a Gastric Plication procedure except that this procedure is non-surgical and does not involve surgical incisions.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty uses internal sutures to reduce stomach volume without removing stomach tissue. FDA-authorized systems are available for eligible adults. Your consultation determines whether the procedure and the locally available program are appropriate for you.
