Worried About Paying for Your Procedure?
Many patients have insurance coverage for the procedures. However, in the current environment the deductibles and co-insurances are high and patients may have few thousand dollars of out of pocket responsibility even when insurance covers the procedure. There are many patients whose insurance does not pay for weight loss procedures. Majority of our patients feel that they should have done the procedure sooner once they experience life after weight loss surgery.
Don’t let the cost keep you from taking steps to a healthier and active life you want and deserve. Investing in your health, well being and longevity is the best investment you can ever make. Weight loss procedures such as Gastric Sleeve, gastric bypass, lap band or gastric balloon can help improve or eliminate your health conditions related to obesity such as Type 2 Diabetes, Sleep apnea, High blood pressure, Joint pains etc, reduce your out-of-pocket cost of medications, doctor and hospital visits and also eliminate lifestyle costs associated with obesity such as time off work for illness and injury, plus-sized clothing prices and others.

CareCredit
Tax Deductible
The entire cost of your bariatric surgery, approved weight-loss drugs and nutritional counseling may qualify for tax deductible write off as a qualified health care expense. We can give you a letter of medical necessity to qualify for a tax deductible write-off. The IRS allows taxpayers undergoing medical procedures to deduct expenses when it is medically necessary. Talk to your tax professional or CPA about how tax deductions can help you and your weight loss surgery process but in general deductions are allowed for uncompensated expenses of treatment cost that is more than 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income. Link to the IRS publication is below here:
Medical Spending Accounts
Some or all of the costs associated with a weight loss program may qualify for reimbursement by an FSA/HSA plan. Check with your account administrator about your plan coverage. We can give you a letter of medical necessity to justify the expense if required.
The Personal Cost of Obesity
A research report by Avi Dor, Ph.D., Christine Ferguson, J.D., Casey Langwith, B.A., Ellen Tan, M.Sc. at Department of public health at George Washington University published in 2010 concludes the following.
- The overall, tangible, annual costs of being obese are $4,879 for an obese woman and $2,646 for an obese man.
- Annual costs including value of lost life are $8,365 for obese women and $6,518 for obese men.
- The above costs DO NOT include increased cost of obese lifestyle such as food, clothing and airline travel expenses.
- As a result, total incremental costs for obese individuals are 15 times higher than the total costs for overweight individuals, irrespective of their gender and employment status.
It is clear based on this research and many others that the cost of the procedure pays itself off in about 2 years at an individual level, not counting savings for insurance companies, employers and so on.
Interestingly if you approach your health purely from an investment standpoint – If you are a female over 35 BMI and delayed bariatric surgery by 5 years then you would have lost $41,825 versus if you had surgery without delay you would save $27,825 after deducting the typical surgery cost and that is not including IRS tax deduction for weight loss surgery expenses.
